CV outcomes with use of telmisartan

<h2 id="aim">Aim</h2><p>Evaluate the cardiovascular outcomes in patients taking telmisartan compared to those taking other ARBs.</p><h2 id="methods">Methods</h2><ul><li>Multicenter retrospective study with data of 19,247 patients from the electronic health records of Korea University Medical Center database.</li><li>Patients taking two or more antihypertensive medications, telmisartan users (n=3,437; 17.9%) were compared with other ARB users (ARB other than telmisartan).</li><li>Primary outcome: Major adverse cardiac events (MACE), a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke, and hospitalizations due to heart failure.</li></ul><h2 id="results">Results</h2><p>BP control was similar in telmisartan and other ARBs groups; however, telmisartan users exhibited significantly lower visit-to-visit BP variability (Figure I).</p><p style="text-align:center;"><img src="https://cdn.megawecare.com/GHBY/Internal-Images/blood-pressure170909.png" width="876" height="500"></p><p>The adjusted 3-year MACE rate was similar between telmisartan users (4.6%) and other ARB users (4.7%, p = 0.75) (Figure 2).</p><p style="text-align:center;"><img src="https://cdn.megawecare.com/GHBY/Internal-Images/incidence_170951.png" width="876" height="500"></p><p>Comparable safety profiles were observed in both the groups.</p><p>Hospitalization due to heart failure was slightly higher in other ARB users (Figure 3 A), while new-onset dialysis was less frequent in telmisartan users (Figure 3B).</p><figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:1294/550;" src="https://cdn.megawecare.com/GHBY/Internal-Images/heart-failure-171023.png" width="876" height="500"></figure><h2 id="conclusion">Conclusion</h2><ul><li>In real-world practice, Telmisartan showed similar cardiovascular outcomes in hypertensive patients using two or more antihypertensive drugs compared to those taking other ARBs.</li><li>Telmisartan users had better renal protective effects and improved visit-to-visit BP variability compared to other AR Bs users.</li></ul>
