Benign prostatic hyperplasia and the risk of falls in older men.

<h2 id="purpose">Purpose</h2><ul><li>To explore the association between benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and the incidence of falls from the perspective of geriatric morbid conditions.</li></ul><h2 id="methods">Methods:</h2><ul><li>Data was sourced from the triennial National Survey of Older Koreans conducted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (2017-2020).</li><li>Information was gathered from 8,135 male participants aged 65 and older through questionnaires and physical measurements.</li></ul><h2 id="results">Results:</h2><ul><li>BPH treatment for more than 3 months was observed in 15.2% (1,238/8,135) patients, 8.0% (648/8,135) experienced falls, with 61.4% (398/648) of these falls resulting in injuries.</li><li>BPH was associated with significantly higher number of falls (odds ratio [OR], 1.798) and falls with injuries (OR, 2.133).</li><li>Higher likelihood of having falls was observed in individuals with BPH who experienced visual or auditory impairment, cognitive decline, depression, lower motor weakness, or limitations in daily activities compared to individuals without BPH.</li><li>In older adults with BPH study shows increased prevalence of falls related to absence of comorbid conditions, presence of 1 and 2 or more comorbid conditions (Figure 1).</li></ul><p>Fig. 1.
